Hidden Lakes Senior Living Community has a long and meaningful history. It began with a vision to provide older adults with a secure, enriching environment where independence and quality care could thrive. Our roots stretch back to 1959 when the Florida Baptist Retirement Center was chartered as an agency of the Florida Baptist State Convention in response to the growing need for a senior ministry.
In 1960, Walter and Elvira Buckingham generously donated their 23-acre homestead in Vero Beach, setting the stage for the construction of what would become a life-changing community for older adults. By March 1961, the first phase of the building was complete, and the Florida Baptist Retirement Center welcomed its first residents.
As the community continued to grow, the vision expanded. By 1963, the congregate living facility was completed, and plans for independent cottages were set in motion. In the following years, Hidden Lakes began to develop its distinct offerings—offering a combination of independent living, skilled nursing care, and other services to support a complete continuum of care.
In 1966, the center’s plans for expansion included the addition of a skilled nursing unit, which opened its doors in August 1968. This allowed the community to enter a new phase of care, expanding its reach to meet the evolving needs of older adults and their families.
By 1992, the community had grown significantly, and a major expansion had been completed. Thirty independent living villas and a 17-bed assisted living neighborhood had been added, solidifying Hidden Lakes as a comprehensive senior living community.
In March 2022, the Florida Baptist Retirement Center transitioned to new ownership and became Hidden Lakes Senior Living Community. Today, the community continues to offer a full range of care, including 42 independent living units, studio and one-bedroom apartments, a 17-bed assisted living neighborhood, and a 24-bed skilled nursing unit.
While our name has changed, our mission remains steadfast. We continue to honor our heritage by providing a warm, supportive environment where residents can thrive. Our focus is on making a meaningful difference in the lives of residents, their families, and our dedicated team by living our mission daily with compassion first.
